The season is over but now the fun begins........

January 9, 2009 9:16 pm

Meet the future Buckeyes starting with 5 stars and moving our way down.

  1. Dorian Bell - Comes to us from Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway HS.  He is rated the #1 WLB in the country.  He had 96 tackles and 3 sacks last year while sharing time with another blue chipper right next to him.  He's 6'0" , 227 lbs, and runs a 4.54 40.
  2. Melvin Fellows - Out of Garfield Heights, Ohio.  He's rated #2 DE in the country.  He's 6'5", 245 lbs., runs a 4.85 40, and is a 5 star like Bell.  Career stats: 154 total tackles (57 solo's, 97 assists) 40 Tackles for a loss 11 sacks.
  3. Jaamal Berry - We stole one from Florida this time.  He's a 5 star and he's ranked # 5 RB in the country.  He's 5'11", 193, and runs a 4.45 40.  I saw him in the Under Armor Game and he ran extremely well with power as well as speed.
  4. Johnny Simon - He's out of the Ohio Powerhouse Cardinal Mooney in Youngstown.  He's at DT who is 6'3" 265 lbs. and runs a 4.7 40.  Buckeyes liked him so well they offered him a scholarship before his Junior year even started.  5 Star
  5. Carlos Hyde - We got another one out of Florida.  He hails from Naples, Florida as a the #1 FB in the country.  He's a 4 star who is 6'0", 225 lbs., and runs a 4.65 40.  Turned down some big names like Florida, Florida St., Miami, Clemson, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
  6. Corey Brown - This corner played along side Dorian Bell in Monroeville (Pa.), Gateway HS.  He's rated as the #8 corner in the country.  He's 6'1", 185 lbs.  and runs a 4.5 40.   Played both ways in HS, but will most likely be a Corner at OSU.  4 Star
  7. Jamie Wood - Comes from the Central Ohio area of Pickerington, Ohio.  He's 6'2", 190 lbs. and runs a 4.5 40.  He will be playing safety when he attends OSU in the fall.  He's ranked #9 safety in the country and will have some time to develop unlike some of the Freshman coming in due to junior at his position currently.
  8. Corey Linsley - Youngstown produced another fine lineman (OL).  He's 6'2", 285 lbs., and runs a 5.2 40.  This guy is ranked 10th overall and he looks like he wants to rip some heads off.  Could be a tank in the next couple of years.
  9. Storm Klein - Coming out of Newark, he has to have the best name for an up and coming LB at The Ohio State University.  He's 6'2", 225, and runs a 4.57 40.  Also a great HS wrestler and if you see his pictures, he, like Linsley, looks like he's gonna kill himself a wolverine with his bare hands.  I hope he turns out like an AJ or ANDY K.  He too is a 4 star.
  10. CJ Barnett - CJ comes from Clayton, Ohio.  He's ranked #5 CB in the country.  He's 6'1", and 175 lbs. Barnett will officially join his fellow Thunderbolt teammate, Kurt Coleman, when he enrolls at Ohio State on March 26 in time for OSU's spring football session. He is a 4 star.

These were the first 10 players I chose to highlight in the upcoming 2009 freshman class.  Check back later to see the final 14 or so in the next week or so.  Hopefully they all pan out but we know how that works out.  Keep rooting them on and thanks for reading about our future of OSU football.

Sincerely

A Loyal Fan Of "The Ohio State Buckeyes"  NCAAB - Ohio State Buckeyes

When is a "system" not a system?

November 13, 2008 12:21 pm

Just angling for peoples thoughts here.

When is it really a "system" offense? I write this because if you want to be really technical about it EVERY offense is a system, is it even an appropriate label?

You see, I was reading an interesting piece a few days ago and the comment was made "Texas Tech no longer has a gimmick/system offense" and that got me thinking, if the offense has not changed since the beginning of Leach's tenure how can it "no longer" be a system? Does it lose the moniker through credibility, respect and results? And also, why does it only seem to only apply to a pass-first spread? You never hear about Paul Johnson's triple-option (for example) being disparaged in the same way. Is that because it is run-based? why? In fact at the moment its doing my head in, so much so, I might go all Al Davis on everyone and flip-out!

Anyhoo, just a few random thoughts, i mean I understand the concept of it all, The Pistol, The A-11 being "system" offenses, but what about the triple-option? Wishbone? Just because you call plays mainly out of the shotgun is just not that unusual anymore so when and how is the label applied?

Hope to get peoples creative juices going here!
